Best English Heritage Dog Walks, East Midlands

We love dogs as much as you do, so there's no reason to leave your pup at home. English Heritage have got lots of options for dog-friendly days out at castles, abbeys and historic gardens. Scroll down to discover the historic places where you can take your pet on an adventure that will really get their tails wagging.

Ashby De La Zouch Castle

The property began as a manor house in the 12th century and reached castle status in the 15th century. Come and find out about the castle’s colourful history with a lively audio tour.

Hear how Edward IV’s Chamberlain Lord Hastings added the chapel and the impressive keep-like Hastings Tower – a castle within a castle.

Visitors can still climb the tower today despite it suffering massive damage during the Civil War. There are great views from the top! Then make sure you discover the underground passage from the kitchen to the tower, probably created during this war, which can still be explored today.

Kirby Hall

Enjoy a great day out at Kirby Hall, exploring the beautiful grounds and rich decoration of one of England’s greatest Elizabethan and 17th-century houses.

Step back in time through a new interactive exhibition ‘Kirby Hall: Rise and Fall’ and experience what the hall would have looked and sounded like in its Jacobean heyday, when King James I was a frequent visitor. A must-see is the stunning hand-painted four-poster bed, inspired by a real bed listed on the hall’s inventory.

Wander through The Great Hall, restored to its historical colour palette, and take in the sounds of the blazing fire and guests arriving in the grand reception room. Then put your best step forward and be greeted by music and the sounds of dining in the Great Chamber before having a go at some of the fun interactive games.

Peveril Castle

The imposing ruins of Peveril Castle stand high above the pretty village of Castleton in the heart of Derbyshire's Peak District. Mentioned in the Domesday survey, Peveril Castle is one of England's earliest Norman fortresses. The keep was built by Henry II in 1176.

A climb to the castle at the top of the hill to enjoy the breathtaking views over the Hope Valley is a highlight of a family day out in Castleton. Explore the remains of the keep including the garderobe (medieval lavatory)!

Displays in the visitor centre tell the story of Peveril as the administrative focus of the Royal Forest of the Peak, a royal hunting preserve since the 11th century.

Bolsover Castle

Sometimes described as a 17th-century 'playboy's mansion', Bolsover is more a lavish place of entertainment than a true castle.

Today you can explore the home and social centre of William Cavendish, 1st Duke of Newcastle, including the riding house where he pioneered the art of dressage in England. As well as some of the finest and best-preserved wall paintings in England, the castle boasts broad views over rural Derbyshire from the terrace and recreated wall walk.
